The Heavy Hitter DJKam
“Bring the beat back!”
Born in the mecca of Hip-Hop – “New York City” – Brooklyn native DJKam was influenced by radio personalities such as Mr. Magic and DJ Red Alert, they embedded in him the desire to study the art form of “DJing”. Always following the sound of “good music,” DJKam began to cultivate his curiosity about the rebellious Hip Hop culture during its golden era.
When Kam’s parents moved him from the Empire State to the suburbs of the Garden State, the seeds of Hip-Hop philosophy bloomed and enabled him to further delve into discovering his journey in the jungle of Hip-Hop. Without many new friends in the subdued suburbs of New Jersey, Kam turned to what he loved – music. He started experimenting on his cousin’s DJ equipment and to deter Kam from destroying the equipment, his cousin Tyree taught him how to operate the turntables and command control over the music with his hands, thereby unleashing a bundle of creativity that was built up in Kam. Having taken creative mental notes from years of listening to Hip-Hop forefathers DJ Kool Herc, Grand Wizzard Theodore, Afrikka Bambaataa, and DJ Marley Marl, and now armed with the technical training he received from his cousin, Kam combined the two and began to make a name for himself throughout his new town. From his first paid DJing job at age 13, Kam established himself as the premier in-house high school DJ and became the “it” guy on the party scene. His passion for DJing superseded all his other hobbies such as basketball, football, and baseball. He studied radio and TV in high school and enlisted himself as the 1st on-air, daily radio DJ his school had ever had!
Kam attempted to pursue a more traditional career path after high school, but something in him kept telling him to, “bring the beat back” which for music maestro DJKam was not a problem! He was good at it and being compensated for it was an excellent motivator for the once shy kid from out of town to turn this one-time musical fantasy into a reality. Kam enrolled in The Art Institute of Philadelphia and studied radio broadcasting. His traditional and nontraditional training has taken him to the studio of Princeton, NJ radio station WPRB 103.3, to owning two record stores, and having ownership in the Music Factory Record Store. In 1998, DJKam transitioned on to mainstream radio in Philadelphia – the nation’s #7 radio market – to work for Radio One’s 103.9 The Beat, where he created mix shows for the morning, day, and night shifts. Kam was a fixture at the station, having held a 10-year posture as one of Philly’s more sought-after DJs. He has DJ‘ed at the 4040 Club in Atlantic City NJ and Club Providence in NJ/NY, and for Big Daddy Kane, Captain Rock (RIP), Will Traxx, Fearless Four, Crash Crew, and a host of others. Kam eventually went on to work as a trailblazing mixologist for XM radio. During his stint on the satellite frequency, radio listenership went up from thousands to ten-million listeners per day!
Kam keeps “an ear to the streets,” which enables the music lover to do his job so effectively. Celebrities such as Kanye West, Busta Rhymes, Ray J, and others have sought him out to create the sounds for their album release parties and other events. He has also provided his unique blends to television viewers on cable networks through Music Choice programming, which services over 50 million subscribers across the United States.
At the present, DJKam and his business partners have cooperatively started an internet station entitled Free Agent Radio, where they intend to keep good music from varying eras of the Hip Hop and R&B genres at its core. He is also the host of “The Traffic Jam Mix with DJKam” on BroadCast HipHop Network, a digital streaming network on the iHeart Radio App that features music and original content for hip-hop culture.
DJKam’s undeniable love for music has allowed him to be an unstoppable movement. Spinning music is the heartbeat of this heavy-hitter, he will definitely make the party people rock! Across the country DJKam is a well-known master of the turntables’, a trailblazer, he is a legend in his own time.
“My job is pure passion, I provide an entertainment service. People work hard all week, my turntable and I allow for an escape – where people can release their anxieties, and just let go and ride with the music.” DJKam
